Overlap app shut down: what to use instead

Overlap is off the App Store. On 6 September 2026 the listing for "Overlap - Travel Together" (id 1617541108) returned a 404 in the US and UK stores, and Apple's lookup API gives zero results for that ID. Pangea bought the company on 24 November 2025 and is the official destination for those accounts, a bigger app carrying a much longer privacy label. The smaller alternatives, one of which is mine, are in the table below with what each one actually does.

What Overlap did

You added your upcoming trips. So did your friends. When two of those trips landed in the same city on overlapping dates, the app told you both, ahead of time rather than after the fact. Pangea's press release described it as "the leading app for frequent travelers to see when and where their paths cross with friends worldwide."

People keep rediscovering that problem on their own. From r/digitalnomad in December 2024: "curious how you all stay connected with friends, or find out who's in your city besides Instagram or current social media… Got many moments where I found out a friend was nearby but left already." In August 2023 someone in r/AppIdeas posted the idea as if it were new, and the top reply was a single line: "Something like this: https://www.overlap-app.com/ ?" That domain now answers with a bot-check interstitial titled "Oh noes!" instead of a homepage.

Overlap itself was small and well liked. The last capture of its App Store page in the Internet Archive, from 14 February 2026, shows 4.9 stars from 34 ratings, developer Overlap PBC, free, iPhone only, English only. The Play listing still standing today has 4.2 stars from 27 reviews and 5,000-plus downloads, with a "Shares Location" flag on the data safety card.

The timeline, as far as it can be checked

The deal was announced on 24 November 2025, terms undisclosed, and covered the same day by Skift and FinSMEs alongside the press release on Travel Massive. Overlap's founder Sharon Rosenberg joined Pangea as Head of Design. Co-founders Nick Zaverdinos and Jason Hu stayed on as advisers. Pangea's CEO Matt Gray wrote under that post that the two products would become one free place for travellers to share plans and connect. Overlap's Android app shipped its final update the following day.

Then iOS just sat there for months. Between mid-February and September 2026 the listing came down, with no announcement post and no export instructions. No shutdown date appears in anything Pangea has published that is still readable. getoverlap.app is still online, still linking to the iOS page that 404s.

Pangea's FAQ for Overlap users is gone too. The URL thepangea.app/blog/faq-overlap-users returns 404 and no longer appears in Pangea's blog index. The search snippet survives, indexed from a page nobody can open any more: "The Overlap App will be phased out as we complete the transition to Pangea. Everything you loved about Overlap now lives inside the Pangea App."

Pangea is the official answer, and it is a bigger app

Pangea is free on both phones with no in-app purchases, and it does more than Overlap ever did. The iPhone build is v0.8.23, updated 10 August 2026, 4.9 stars from 74 ratings, first released in March 2022. The Android version was updated 5 August 2026 and shows 5,000-plus downloads. Its store copy promises to show you "who's nearby, who's visiting your city, and where your trips overlap", plus an AI assistant, a travel tracker, a pin map, recommendations and group trip planning. Overlap's trip-matching is in there.

The privacy panel on that same store page declares Coarse Location as data linked to you, across four purposes, one of which is "Developer's Advertising or Marketing". Contact Info, Contacts and Identifiers are linked to you as well. Precise Location appears under data not linked to you, for app functionality. If you were using Overlap because it was a small app that only knew about cities and dates, that is a different deal. Read the privacy panel before you migrate the friend list.

Pangea has kept buying. Nomadago was announced on 5 December 2025, then Flaire's IP portfolio, and the acquisition release counts "250+ niche travel products ripe for integration." Overlap was the first of those, and the only completed one so far ended in a delisted App Store page.

An unrelated app is now called Overlap

There is an app called LetsOverlap on the App Store now, released 9 March 2026 by League of Veterans, v1.1.7 as of 28 August 2026. It is a different developer on a different domain, letsoverlap.app, with no relation to Sharon Rosenberg's team as far as anything on either page says. Its description opens with "Overlap shows you when your friends' travel plans line up with yours" and lists calendar sync, a map, "feeler trips" and an Overlap tab. It is free and sits at 4.6 stars from eleven US ratings, with an Android build too, at ten-plus downloads. The store copy runs close enough to the original that anyone landing there from a dead bookmark will read it as continuity.

The alternatives, checked one by one

Everything below was opened on 6 September 2026, and where I could not verify something the cell says so instead of guessing.

Read the rating counts before the feature lists. CitySync has four ratings and dipity! two. ANEAR, the one that pitches itself hardest on not needing your location, has none at all. People are still building the thing Overlap built, which is good news, though none of those three has cleared five ratings yet. Space/Time has been sitting untouched since January 2025, which usually means abandoned. TripSynq is a live web app with a blog, free with no card required, and no iPhone or Android build linked from its homepage.

Heer was invite-only, and it let you share your current city and upcoming trips. Searching the US App Store for it now returns no result at all.

The Android side of this category is tiny

Overlap's own Android build stopped in November 2025. Pangea is the only app in the table with a real Android user base behind it, at 5,000-plus downloads. ANEAR shows a hundred-plus installs there. LetsOverlap and Same City are both at ten-plus. For CitySync, dipity! and Space/Time I could find no Android build at all, which is the normal first-platform choice at that size.

From r/apps in November 2025: "My entire friend group uses Find My and I'm just... not there." If half your friends are on Android, an iPhone-only overlap app cannot match those trips at all.

Where Will U Be There fits, and where it doesn't

A trip is a city and two dates. That is all the server ever gets. When your trip lands within 100 km of a friend's trip and the dates touch, you both get a push notification. Miss each other by a few days and it flags the near miss, up to about a week, so you can shift a day if you want to. A matched friend sees the overlapping city and those dates, and nothing else from your trip list. If a friend lives where you are going, you are matched too, provided they will actually be home that week.

It never receives your location. No GPS and no coarse location, because there is nothing to use. It cannot tell you a friend is three streets away right now, and if that is what you want, this is the wrong app. The full data list is at privacy first.

Friends do not need to sign up one at a time. Create a group for the ski week or the conference, share one link, up to 200 people, no friend requests inside it. It also does something on your first trip before anyone joins: concerts, exhibitions, festivals and markets within 15 km of where you are staying, inside your dates, from over 360 sources across 57 countries. Coverage is uneven, dense in some cities and close to empty in others.

What it does not have, and Overlap did: a travel tracker and a map of the countries you have been to. Pangea has that, plus the pin map and the AI assistant. If those were the features you opened Overlap for, Pangea is the better migration. Read its privacy label first. I compared this whole category app by app in apps that tell you when friends are in the same city, and wrote up the mechanics of doing this without location sharing in knowing when a friend is in the same city.

One practical thing while the Android build still answers. If you have trips or a friend list inside Overlap that you care about, open it and screenshot them this week. There is no documented export anywhere I could find, and the FAQ page that would have told you what happens to your data now returns a 404.
